During your search, confirm that the financial team you’ll be working with hold designations such as:
- Certified Financial Planner
- Chartered Financial Consultant
- Personal Financial Specialist
- Certified Fund Specialist
- Certified Investment Management AnalystSM.
Each of these certifications represent a commitment to continual education and to uphold their by-laws as the recognized standard of excellence for competent and ethical personal financial advisement. Not every financial firm has personnel with these credentials.
In addition, be cautious about anyone using a designation that implies an expertise in financial planning for senior citizens. Many of these so-called designations have little or no merit and the individual may not be qualified to provide advice on managing your assets. Senior citizens should be especially cautious of predatory tactics used by advisors holding such designations.
